Blog: How are California’s State Legislature and/or local governments using their power to preserve state and local values in the face of conflicting Federal policies?


 California has enacted laws making California a sanctuary state -- which limits how local governments can cooperate with ICE. This was done to protect California values. California and Californians are divided as NPR reports:

 "In California, a new state law that took effect earlier this year is pitting cities against each other in a fierce debate over immigration.

SB 54, called the California Values Act, essentially makes California a sanctuary state by limiting how much local law enforcement can cooperate with federal authorities to enforce immigration law. It has divided the state, with some cities embracing the sanctuary law and other cities actively defying the state."

Blog: Describe the community in which CP operates (3/26)

Blog: Describe the community in which your CP operates… is it a city, a town, a rural area? What kind of mayor does the community have? Does your CP have any interaction with local government officials? The city in which my CP operates is San Jose. In fact, it is near the downtown area of San Jose. It is off North First Street. The Second Harvest Food Bank does indeed have some connection with some local government agencies. I am not sure about specific officials. SHFB states on their website: " Our partners share our belief that hunger is unacceptable. We partner with nonprofit agencies and government entities that serve those among us struggling to make ends meet. Blog: Devolution & Subsidarity (2/12)

Blog Topic #4: Define “subsidiarity” in your own words. How is the concept of subsidiarity as discussed in today’s reading related to “devolution” as described in your textbook? Google “devolution in Kenya” for an ambitious example of how governments might use devolution to achieve a desirable level of subsidiarity.
