MVE Reflection

#2: What opportunities have you had at NDNU to develop relationships that honor the dignity or sacredness of each person or each being, including human and non-human beings? Why is this important? Can you apply this concept to the kinds of decisions you may have to make in your future professional career? Have any of the Community Engagement activities you’ve done this semester given you opportunities to develop in this area? Answer: I had many opportunites at NDNU and developed many different relationships that honor the dignity of each person. In fact, many of my classes had that aspect of respect and dignity of human beings and in truth, all classes I have taken have shown that. I have not met a professor who has not cultivated that idea of respecting the dignity and sacredness of each person.  #3 Have any ethical issues arisen for you during your time here as a member of the NDNU campus community? Did any of these arise out of your Community Engagement activities? ...

Blog: CP Funding (4/9)

Blog: Does your CP rely on money or services provided by any other entity (public or private)? Are the money or services provided in a consistent and reliable manner or is the CP subject to periodic application, approval, re-application, etc.? How does this consistency, or lack thereof, affect your CP’s operations? Do other people or organizations rely on your CP to provide funding? I am not sure whether Second Harvest Food Bank is funded other than donations. I heard there was some federal funding but it is not clear to me. I tried searching on the web and was unable to find whether they get federal money or not. The closest I found was the following: https://www.shfb.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/2018_annualreport.pdf

Blog: Devolution & Subsidarity (2/12)

Blog Topic #4: Define “subsidiarity” in your own words. How is the concept of subsidiarity as discussed in today’s reading related to “devolution” as described in your textbook? Google “devolution in Kenya” for an ambitious example of how governments might use devolution to achieve a desirable level of subsidiarity. Subsidiarity means issues should be dealt with at the smallest level (i.e. the local and state level) and is almost synonymous with devolution.  Devolution as described in the prompt as happening in Kenya has been said to have strengthened democracy in that area but also increased ethnic identification.  See:  http://theconversation.com/kenya-illustrates-both-the-promise-as-well-as-the-pitfalls-of-devolution-96729

Blog: A Budget is a Statement of Values (4/2)

Blog: “A budget is a statement of values.” What values underlies the way your CP gets and spends its money or resources? Which Hallmarks, if any, are expressed in the way your CP manages its budgeting and service delivery? My CP gets their money and resources through donations as well as through other means. The hallmark which reflects their values is that which says that "We commit ourselves to community service" which means they help themselves and others through community service

Blog: Describe the community in which CP operates (3/26)

Blog: Describe the community in which your CP operates… is it a city, a town, a rural area? What kind of mayor does the community have? Does your CP have any interaction with local government officials? The city in which my CP operates is San Jose. In fact, it is near the downtown area of San Jose. It is off North First Street. The Second Harvest Food Bank does indeed have some connection with some local government agencies. I am not sure about specific officials. SHFB states on their website: " Our partners share our belief that hunger is unacceptable. We partner with nonprofit agencies and government entities that serve those among us struggling to make ends meet. These partners provide a range of services to our culturally diverse community and include soup kitchens, pantries, rehabilitation centers, shelters, schools, libraries, senior centers, medical clinics and more." https://www.shfb.org/impact/our-work/community-partners/ SHFB also hosted a legisl...
